* Sonoma County passed a new ordinance - prior to that rides like our club rides that require following the CA vehicle code were exempt from permitting. Now any ride with over 250 participants requires an encroachment permit. Furthermore, a permit would be required for any ride where we have more than 100 participants if we have a "mass start" unless we have no more than 50 riders leave at any one time, with at least 5 minutes between groups. So for larger rides, we cannot have any groups start at the same time and need to break up groups larger than 50.
Why don't we just get a permit? The lead time to get a permit is 60 days or longer and the process would take as much as 20 hours of volunteer time to complete (applications, meetings, obtaining approvals from multiple agencies, etc.), plus a permit fee. We would also need to have all details on our ride months in advance (which we do not have for normal club events) and the County could impose requirements that would be costly (like CHP or medical support) or could ask us to change routes, start times, etc. This is simply infeasible for our all volunteer organization and for a free member-only event. So we will limit "regular" club rides to 250 or less.
